Why “Know your numbers”?
As a self proclaimed health and longevity expert and content creator I always say “know your numbers”.
But what numbers?
And why?
First, blood pressure.
Check your BP early in the morning before coffee.
If you think it’s too high modify your behavior.
If you drink, try stopping for a few days. Does that help? Yes it does!
High Blood Pressure is a key indicator that you are likely to develop dementia.
Get it under control.
Liver Enzymes
ALT/AST
You find these in your COMPREHENSIVE METABOLIC PANEL
Get your lab results!
High numbers, again, stop drinking, you’re liver can recover, then monitor and moderate drinking.
VO2 Max
VO2 max, the maximum volume of oxygen your body can absorb and use during exercise) serves as one of the single most reliable predictors of long-term brain health and cognitive longevity.
VO2 max over 44 is considered good for a 30 year old, over 26 for 60 somethings.
Use an Apple watch and your health app or any fitness tracker.
Low number? Exercise will fix it!
Kidney Function
Your eGFR on your Basic Metabolic Panel
90 is great, over 60 OK, less than 60, find out why.
My low reading was because I am taking Creatine which can throw off the reading.
CRP
C-Reactive Protein
A single CRP reading only provides a snapshot in time. Establishing your personal baseline, your typical, steady-state CRP level when you are healthy and free from acute illness, is essential for accurate medical interpretation when you are ill.
Mine jumped to 160 during a recent infection but returned to less than 5 over the next few months.
For Men
PSA
They say “we don’t check PSA after 70”
That’s bullshit.
I check mine!
