Spinal radiculopathy is a condition caused by the compression, inflammation, or irritation of a spinal nerve root, resulting in pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness that radiates along the nerve’s pathway into the arm or leg.
Spinal radiculopathy occurs when nearby spinal structures mechanically pinch or biochemically irritate a nerve root where it branches off the spinal cord.
Primary Mechanical & Degenerative Causes
Herniated or Bulging Discs: The soft inner core (nucleus pulposus) extrudes through the outer ring (annulus) and presses directly against the adjacent exiting nerve root.
Bone Spurs (Osteophytes): Osteoarthritis causes bone spurs to form around the facet joints and neural foramina, narrowing the exit window (foraminal stenosis).
Degenerative Disc Disease: Loss of disc hydration and height collapses the intervertebral space, pinching exiting nerve roots.
Spondylolisthesis: A vertebra slips out of alignment over the one beneath it, shearing or trapping nerve roots in the narrowed canal.
Thickened Ligaments: Hypertrophy of the ligamentum flavum encroaches on the spinal canal and neural exits.
Inflammatory & Other Triggers
Chemical Radiculitis: Disc ruptures leak inflammatory proteins that chemically irritate the nerve root, causing radicular symptoms even with minimal mechanical pressure.
Spinal Fractures or Trauma: Traumatic impact can displace bone fragments directly into the nerve pathways.
Rare Causes: Spinal tumors, infections (like epidural abscesses), or cysts occupying space in the foramen.
How did I avoid spinal fusion surgery?
Over 23 years ago, I was told I was too young for spinal fusion surgery, frustrated and in pain I discovered that they were doing disc replacement surgery in Germany and had been doing it for years.
My journey to eliminate my pain took me to Stenum hospital in Germany, where I received an artificial disc replacement at L4-5.
Are you eligible for disc replacement or do you need fusion?
Determining whether you are eligible for artificial disc replacement or require a fusion depends on a formal evaluation of your imaging and spine stability.
